Proper selection and thermal management are critical for reliable operation of diodes and SCRs.

  • Always select devices with sufficient voltage and current margins.

  • Use appropriate heatsinks and cooling methods based on current rating.

How do I choose the correct current rating?

For industrial applications, we recommend selecting 3–5× the actual working current to handle surge current, temperature rise, and inductive load conditions.

Guidelines:

  • Light resistive load → ≥ 3× working current

  • Inductive or harsh load → ≥ 4–5× working current

For devices above 10A, a heatsink is required. Forced air cooling (fan) is recommended for improved reliability.


What voltage rating should I select?

Choose a device with at least 2× the AC line voltage.

Examples:

  • 220V AC → 600V device

  • 380V AC → 1200V device

This margin helps protect against voltage spikes and transient conditions.


Do I need a snubber or RC protection circuit?

Yes, RC snubber or surge protection is strongly recommended for inductive loads such as:

This helps suppress voltage spikes and protects the diode or SCR from damage.
