Soft Starter Selection Guide: Complete Sizing & Load Chart (1 kW – 800 kW)

What Is a Soft Starter and When Do You Need One?

A soft starter is a motor control device that gradually ramps up voltage during startup, limiting inrush current to 2–4× rated current instead of the 6–8× spike from direct-on-line starting. This protects motors, connected equipment, and electrical infrastructure from mechanical and thermal stress.

You need a soft starter when:
- Your motor causes voltage dips or trips breakers at startup
- You need to reduce mechanical shock on pumps, conveyors, or fans
- Your application requires controlled acceleration and deceleration
- You want to extend motor and equipment service life without variable speed control

Quickly select the right soft starter for your motor with SoftStarterPro. This interactive guide helps you determine the recommended power based on your motor's voltage, load type, and power (kW or HP).

Step-by-Step Soft Starter Selection Guide

Step 1: Confirm Motor Voltage

Select the motor's operating voltage. Default is 380V. For custom voltages (220 / 415 / 440 / 480 / 660 / 690 V), please select from the dropdown.

Voltage Type Power Range Note
Three-phase 380V 0.4 – 800 kW Default industrial standard, suitable for most loads
Custom Voltage: 220 / 415 / 440 / 480 / 660 / 690 V 0.4 – 500 kW Contact us for OEM/ODM solutions or special order

Step 2: Load Classification & Selection Principle

Load Type Typical Equipment Selection Factor (Power Coefficient)
Pump Centrifugal pump, screw pump, water pump 1.2
Fan Ventilation fan, axial fan 1.2
Light Conveyor Small belt or screw conveyor 1.3
Crusher Crusher, extruder 1.6
Mixer Industrial mixer 1.6
Compressor Compressor 1.5
Winder / Hoist Winder, elevator, hoist 1.5 – 1.7
Unknown Other / Not sure 1.6 (Heavy load default)

Why Does Load Type Affect Soft Starter Selection?

The selection factor accounts for the starting torque demand of each load type. Centrifugal loads like pumps and fans require low starting torque and allow a lower factor (1.2). High-inertia or constant-torque loads like crushers, mixers, and extruders demand significantly higher starting torque — requiring a larger soft starter relative to motor nameplate power to avoid overload trips and premature wear.

When in doubt, always select the higher factor. An oversized soft starter runs cooler and lasts longer; an undersized one will fault under load.

Step 3: Choose the Right Soft Starter Type

Our factory default recommendation is Online Soft Starter for cost-effective, stable performance. For custom requirements, Built-in Soft Starter or By-pass Soft Starter options are available on request.

Type Best For  Key Advantage
Online Soft Starter  Pumps, fans, general motors  Lowest cost, simple installation
By-pass Soft Starter  Frequent starts, long runtime      No heat buildup during operation
Built-in Soft Starter  Panel integration Space-saving, compact design

Step 4: Soft Starter vs VFD — Which Do You Need?

Feature    Soft Starter  VFD
Speed control No (start/stop only)  Yes (full speed range)
Energy saving   Limited   High (up to 50% on fans/pumps)
Cost     Lower       Higher
Installation Simple Requires parameter configuration
Best for   Fixed-speed motors  Variable speed applications

Choose a soft starter when your motor runs at fixed speed and you only need controlled starting and stopping. Choose a VFD when variable speed control or significant energy savings are required. For most pump and fan applications below 75kW, a soft starter is the more cost-effective solution.

Step 5: Common Troubleshooting

  • Soft starter does not start → Check motor connection, input voltage, and load selection factor.
  • Overheating →  Ensure soft starter rated power ≥ motor power × selection factor. Check ventilation and ambient temperature.
  • Vibration or noise → Verify motor-load coupling alignment. Avoid sustained overload operation.
  • Fault codes →Refer to the product manual or contact our technical team directly via WhatsApp for fast support.
