How It Works

A soft starter uses SCR phase control to gradually ramp up motor voltage during startup, limiting inrush current to 2–4 times rated current compared to 6–8 times with direct-on-line starting. Once the motor reaches full speed, it switches to full voltage operation — reducing electrical stress and extending the service life of motors, pumps, and connected equipment.
